🍁 Best Time by Season
Late September–early October: Kanas autumn peak — golden birches, turquoise water, fewer crowds. June–July: Ili lavender bloom and Sayram wildflowers. December–February: Hemu winter wonderland with frozen lakes and sleigh rides. May & October: shoulder season with lower prices and decent weather.
🌲 Altitude & Climate
Most destinations are between 1,000–2,500m — lower than Tibet, but still pack warm layers. Kanas can drop to freezing at night even in September. The Ili Valley is milder. Summer days are warm (20–28°C) but UV is intense at altitude — bring sunscreen and a hat.
🏏 Kazakh & Tuva Culture
Northern Xinjiang is home to Kazakh nomads and the Tuwa people (believed to be descendants of Genghis Khan's soldiers). Stay in a traditional yurt, drink fermented mare's milk (koumiss), watch eagle hunting demonstrations, and listen to throat singing around the fire.
