Shanxi
The ancient heart of China - Buddhist cave temples, Ming Dynasty cities, and sacred mountains
Shanxi: Cradle of Chinese Civilization
Shanxi province is the ancient heart of China - a land where 3,000 years of history are carved into cliff faces, preserved in Ming Dynasty walled cities, and enshrined in Buddhist temples atop sacred peaks. The Yungang Grottoes near Datong, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contain 51,000 Buddhist statues carved into sandstone cliffs 1,500 years ago, while the perfectly preserved city of Pingyao offers a time-capsule glimpse of Ming and Qing Dynasty China with its intact city walls, courtyard mansions, and China's first bank.
Shanxi is also home to Mount Wutai, one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, where over 50 temples cluster around five flat peaks. Best seasons are May to October when mountain roads are open and the weather is pleasant. Our private tours cover all major sites with comfortable transport and knowledgeable guides who bring Shanxi's deep history to life.
