Luoyang

Ancient Capital of 13 Dynasties & Eastern Gateway to the Silk Road

Why Visit Luoyang

🛕

Longmen Grottoes

Marvel at one of China's three great Buddhist cave art sites — a UNESCO World Heritage treasure featuring over 100,000 Buddha statues carved into limestone cliffs along the Yi River. The colossal Vairocana Buddha, standing 17 meters tall, is one of the most sublime achievements of Chinese art.

🕌

White Horse Temple

Visit China's very first Buddhist temple, established in 68 AD under Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty. According to legend, two white horses carried Buddhist scriptures from India to Luoyang, giving the temple its name. Today it remains an active monastery with beautiful halls and international temples.

🥋

Shaolin Temple

Journey to the legendary birthplace of Kung Fu and Chan (Zen) Buddhism, nestled on Mount Song near Dengfeng. Watch awe-inspiring martial arts demonstrations by warrior monks, explore the ancient Pagoda Forest, and feel the spiritual energy that has drawn pilgrims and martial artists for over 1,500 years.

🌸

Peony Capital

Experience the world-famous Luoyang Peony Festival each April, when the city erupts in a blaze of color with millions of peonies in bloom. Revered as the "King of Flowers" in Chinese culture, Luoyang's peonies have been celebrated for over 1,500 years and draw visitors from across the globe.

Best Time to Visit

🌸

Spring (Apr-May)

The peak season — and for good reason. April is peony month, when Luoyang's parks and gardens explode with millions of blooms in every imaginable color. The Peony Festival draws crowds, so book hotels well in advance. Temperatures are pleasant (15-25°C) and the Longmen Grottoes are at their most photogenic with spring greenery along the Yi River.

🍁

Autumn (Sep-Oct)

Arguably the most pleasant season — clear skies, comfortable temperatures (12-24°C), and fewer crowds than spring. Golden ginkgo leaves around White Horse Temple create magical photo opportunities. October's National Day holiday (Oct 1-7) brings domestic tourists — plan your visit outside this window for a more relaxed experience.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Hot and humid (28-37°C) with occasional rainstorms. The upside: the Longmen Grottoes are illuminated at night from May through October, offering a completely different and deeply atmospheric perspective. Visit attractions early morning and spend the midday heat resting or exploring Luoyang Museum's air-conditioned halls.

Winter (Nov-Mar)

Cold (-3 to 8°C) with occasional snow. The Longmen Grottoes dusted with snow are breathtakingly serene, and you will have the caves nearly to yourself. The Old Town takes on a quiet, atmospheric charm with steaming bowls of hu la tang (spicy soup) warming chilly evenings. Hotel rates drop significantly outside the Spring Festival period.
