Xinjiang Packing List: What to Bring on the Silk Road

September 30, 2026

Xinjiang is the most climatically extreme province of China. You might leave Kashgar at 20°C in the morning and reach Karakul Lake at 3,600m with snow flurries by noon. Turpan is a furnace in summer; the high-speed train carriage is arctic air-conditioned. Packing wrong here isn't uncomfortable — it can spoil the trip. Here's exactly what we tell our own passengers to bring.

The #1 Rule: Layers, Layers, Layers

Across a single Silk Road day in Xinjiang you can experience 25°C of temperature swing. Mornings at the Kanas lake are near-freezing; afternoons in Turpan hit 40°C. The winning system: base layer + fleece + wind shell, all easy to peel off and tie around the waist. Skip the single heavy parka — it's useless when you overheat.

Documents & Money (Don't Forget These)

  • Passport (original, 6-month validity): Non-negotiable. You'll be asked for it at every hotel and train station.
  • Chinese visa: Check if your passport qualifies for visa-free entry (China has a 30-day visa-free policy for 40+ countries including the US, EU, UK, Australia). If not, apply before departure.
  • Border permit: Required for Karakul Lake, the Karakoram Highway to Pakistan, and any Tajik/Kyrgyz border area. Your hotel or tour operator arranges this in Kashgar in 1–2 working days — bring your passport.
  • Some cash (CNY): Cards and Alipay barely work outside Urumqi's big hotels. Bring ¥1,500–3,000 in small bills for bazaars, drivers, and national park entry. ATMs exist in every county town.
  • Printed hotel/tour confirmations: Chinese registration form occasionally needs a paper copy.

Clothing by Season

Spring (Apr–May) / Autumn (Sep–Oct): T-shirts, a warm fleece, a wind- and water-resistant shell, one pair of long trousers, one pair of shorts, a swimsuit (for the hotel spa), comfortable walking shoes. Nights in Kashgar are 5–10°C — pack a beanie and gloves for the Pamir day trip.

Summer (Jun–Aug): Turpan and the Flaming Mountains can hit 45°C. Bring breathable lightweight shirts, a wide-brim hat, and sunscreen — but still pack the fleece for the mountains and the air-conditioned train.

Winter (Dec–Feb): Kashgar and Urumqi are -5 to -15°C. Insulated parka, thermal base layers, down vest, warm gloves, wool socks, and sturdy winter boots. Kanas in winter is a frozen wonderland but brutally cold.

Sun & Dust Protection (Essential, Not Optional)

Xinjiang's desert UV is brutal. At 3,600m on the Pamir Highway the atmosphere filters almost nothing.

  • SPF 50+ sunscreen — reapply every 2 hours, including on your ears and neck.
  • Polarized sunglasses — essential for snow/desert glare and driving.
  • Wide-brim hat or sun hood — a baseball cap isn't enough.
  • Scarf, buff or shemagh — the single most useful item. Shields from desert dust, sun, and cold; doubles as a picnic blanket.
  • Lip balm with SPF — the dry climate cracks lips in an hour.

Altitude & Health

Most Xinjiang cities (Kashgar 1,290m, Urumqi 800m, Turpan -154m) are fine. But the Pamir day trip reaches 3,600m and the Karakoram Highway climbs to 4,693m at the Khunjerab Pass. Bring: any personal prescription medicines (copies of prescriptions), Diamox if you're sensitive to altitude, rehydration salts, and a basic first-aid kit (band-aids, antidiarrheal, painkillers). Drink water constantly — the air humidity is often under 20%.

Electronics & Connectivity

  • Universal travel adapter (Type A/I): China uses 220V. Bring a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have enough sockets.
  • VPN: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are blocked in mainland China. Install and test your VPN before arrival — app stores block VPN downloads in China.
  • Offline maps: Download maps.me or the offline region in Google Maps. Cell signal vanishes in the mountains.
  • Translation app: Download offline Chinese language packs in Google Translate or Pleco.
  • Power bank (20,000mAh): Long drives on the Karakoram Highway last 6–8 hours with no charging.
  • Camera + extra battery: Cold drains batteries fast; keep spares in an inner pocket.

What NOT to Bring

Skip heavy guidebooks (use your phone), expensive jewelry (leave valuables in the hotel safe), more than one pair of shoes, and any drone — drones are heavily restricted in Xinjiang without a special permit, and flying one without permission leads to serious trouble. Don't bring pork products or alcohol into Uyghur areas out of respect for local customs.

A Final Tip From Our Drivers

Our local drivers have made the Kashgar–Pamir run over a thousand times. Their advice: put the scarf, sunscreen, power bank, and a bottle of water in a small day bag that stays in the car, not your suitcase. You'll thank us at 4,000m on the way to Karakul Lake.
